Your Words Can Ever Hurt Me (current series)

Have you ever said something that you immediately wished you could take back? Those of us who have been hurt by painful words know that the old saying, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me,” is definitely not true. The third chapter in James contains a vivid description of the intense damage that an “unchecked tongue” can cause. Verse 8 reads, “But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.” Our words have the strength to bring great joy and healing, or intense damage and suffering. Speaking hurtful words can be tempting in the heat of the moment, but we must avoid such a temptation. If you are a believer, speaking damaging words can also hurt your witness for Jesus. Today, ask God to reveal if your words have honored Him. You may even need to “reverse” past damage by apologizing to someone you have hurt.
