The song "Silent Night" was written in German by Joseph Mohr. On December24, 1818, Mohr asked his friend, Franz Gruber, to add a melody and guitar accompaniment to his poem "Stille Nacht! Heilige Nacht," for a Midnight Mass. "Silent Night" was born. But the song was not translated into English until some 45 years later. One of the most unique qualities about this song is the humble, gentle character of its author. Mohr was born into poverty and died penniless. He donated all his earning to the care of the elderly and the education of children in his area. He was known as a "reliable friend of mankind: toward the poor, a gentle, helping father." The author of this song, now enjoyed across the world, lived his life in relative obscurity. Yet in that life, he demonstrated the very characteristics of humility and love modeled by the Savior he wrote about.
