The first chapter of James begins with a study of a topic many of us would prefer to avoid - adversity. Although most of us would like to forget that adversity exists, we will all face moments of hardship throughout our lives. Our world is a broken world, and we will never experience a perfect life until we are with Jesus Christ in heaven. But before that day comes, we can allow God to use trials and suffering for His eternal purposes. Romans 8:28 tells us, “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” Meanwhile, James 1 reminds us to “count it all joy” when we fall into trials of all kinds, because God can use those situations to produce patience: “that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.” When we face trials in this life, we have two choices: to run from God or run to God. Our choice will determine our future, and the impact our witness will have on others. Will you let your current trial produce nothing but pain, or will you trust God and allow Him to “work all things together for good”?
