In this second part of his series on Zechariah, Pastor Alan looks at the prophecies concerning the end times and the focus on Jerusalem and events in the Middle East.
He shows how the Middle East is without doubt the world's most volatile hotspot and the city of Jerusalem, itself, probably the most fought over city in history. In 1917 the deliverance of Jerusalem from Turkish occupation by General Allenby marked the beginning of the ending of the "Times of the Gentiles". However, the contradictory pledges to the Arabs and the Zionist Jews by the "McMahon Agreement" and the "Balfour Declaration" respectively, mass Jewish immigration, the Arab rising in the late 1930's, the rise of Jewish terrorist movements and the setting up of the Zionist Israeli State in 1948 have all combined to make Jerusalem the "cup of trembling" and "burdensome stone" foretold in the Scriptures.
Pastor Alan also explains that there are two "Jerusalems" in the Scriptures - one the literal city of Jerusalem, the other, "prophetic Jerusalem", which refers to the lands where God's true Israel peoples dwell, also described elsewhere as "towns without walls".
The prophecy of Zechariah also graphically describes the effects of nuclear warfare and shows that Jerusalem will be the root and cause of the final conflagration of the ages, the "Battle of the Day of God Almighty". Pastor Alan explains that in the midst of this worldwide conflict, true Israel will turn back to their God in repentance and Zechariah describes the Lord's Return to "cut short the days" for Israel, His Elect's sake.
This is an encouraging and comforting message for Christians today at the climax of this age, especially considering current events in the Middle East.
