Does Thin Equal Beautiful?
By: Dr. Ed Welch | 2/3/2006

Are we possibly treasuring beauty as defined by the world and pursuing the idol of attaining that beauty? How should we as Christians think about beauty and our bodies? Is there a way for us as Christians to care for our bodies well while seeking to treasure Christ above all things?

Our body image gets at the core of how we view ourselves, and in turn, how we feel about our worth as persons. Christians and non-Christians both agree that this issue of how we view our bodies is in fact a significant issue. It affects everyone; including the women in our congregation. How we respond to these issues of body image and beauty have contributed to many women struggling with a variety of destructive behaviors. Some of these behaviors are obvious, like those associated with eating disorders. Others are more subtle, like obsessively counting calories or weighing ourselves. Either way, these behaviors on the surface can reveal much deeper struggles taking place at the level of our hearts. Are we possibly treasuring beauty as defined by the world and pursuing the idol of attaining that beauty? How should we as Christians think about beauty and our bodies? Is there a way for us as Christians to care for our bodies well while seeking to treasure Christ above all things?
