The apostle Paul's ministry was under attack by what he called the "super apostles." These "super apostles" were known for boasting about themselves. Paul responds to this challenge by doing some boasting of his own. But instead of boasting in his strengths, Paul boasts in his weaknesses so that Christ may be seen as powerful and sufficient.
