A Vision for Holiness (94A)
Speaker: John R. W. Stott
Date: 8/8/2006
References: Galatians 5:22-24
Introduction:
  • Galatians 5:22-24 is Stott's favorite passage.
Love is the pre-eminent Christian grace.
  • Love is greater than right beliefs.
  • Love is greater than faith.
  • Love is greater than religious experiences.
  • Love is greater than service.
Love brings joy and peace.
  • Happiness is elusive.
  • God gives joy and peace to those who pursue him in love.
  • When we die to our self-centeredness, we begin to live.
Love results in patience, kindness, and goodness.
  • Love is sacrificial service.
  • Love is patient, kind, and good.
Love is balanced by self-control.
  • We have to master our selves, before they can be used to serve others.
Love is the fruit of the Spirit.
  • The flesh and the Spirit are in a tug of war in us.
  • We are to crucify the flesh.
  • We are to feed the Spirit.
  • Illustration: Father uses green peach to show his daughters how the Spirit would ripen Charles Simeon.
Conclusion:
  • Only Jesus displayed the fruit of the Spirit to perfection.
  • Christlikeness is holiness, and God's purpose for us.
