Take An Inside Look (89A)
Speaker: Larry Crabb
Date: 7/22/2006
References: Matthew 23:27
Introduction:
  • There are private realities deep in people's souls that need to be looked at carefully.
  • Jesus told the religious people of his day, "Clean the inside first."
  • What does it mean to take an inside look to find the kind of joy and reality our Lord wants us to know in our lives?
When we look inside, we'll see pain.
  • Illustration: Woman who was happy on the outside but unhappy being a woman because of sexual abuse.
  • We need to take a hard look at ourselves.
  • We're going to see hurt and pain.
  • Illustration: Young man with a physical deformity was sent away by his parents to an institution when he was young.
  • Each of us has a story of pain.
  • Illustration: Man who had a hard time seeing that he was disappointed that his dad never entered into his life.
When we look inside, we'll see some anger.
  • We're self-centered, and we want to use people to make us feel better.
  • Illustration: The man who wanted to feel better quickly, so Crabb recommends a drunken affair.
  • We all want to feel good quickly, because we all have pain.
  • Illustration: Crabb's friends told him that he wasn't being a very good friend to them.
  • We're all committed to finding ways to avoid inner pain.
  • But if we can explore our pain and give up self-protection, we can know joy.
