The Gravy Train Gospel (26C)
Speaker: Mr. Chuck Colson
Date: 1/1/1900
References: 1 Peter 1:13-16
Introduction
  • Illustration: Colson comments on a Washington Post article that understands radical changes in political views but can't understand his conversion to Jesus Christ.
  • Illustration: Colson comments on a Newsweek article about the baby boomers' obsession with money.
  • Illustration: Colson tells about a man renting a car who insisted upon having a black Lincoln Continental.
  • Illustration: Colson tells his own life story to show that nothing but a relationship with God through Jesus Christ can give us security.
  • God doesn't demand our achievement, he demands our obedience.
Don't buy into the values of our culture.
  • Be careful to discern what's really Christian.
  • Understand that being a Christian won't necessarily be comfortable.
Allow God's Word to radicalize your life.
  • The Bible is the inerrant, inspired Word of God, and you can live and trust your life under its authority.
  • Read the Bible and let it change you.
Live a life of true holiness.
  • Holiness is not following a set of rules.
  • Holiness is conforming to the character of God.
  • Faith in action is true holiness.
    - Illustration: Christian convicts demonstrated holiness by helping rebuild the home of a poor family, and people running a home for relatives of prisoners demonstrated holiness to those staying there.
Live a changed life out of thankfulness to God.
  • We are called to be a different people, changed by God.
    - Illustration: Cathleen Webb, who lied about a man raping her, confessed to her lie because God changed her.
  • We must not take the grace of God for granted.
Conclusion
  • If you are committed to radical Christianity in direct opposition to a culture consumed with self, your course is not without peril.
  • God wants us to live our lives as men and women committed to obedient Christian living.
